Police have given Beyond Radio an update on the investigations into the Morecambe v Bolton Wanderers match in February.
The clash at the Mazuma was marred by pitch invasions, allegations of assaults after the match, as well as an allegation of racist abuse.
Det Sgt Adie Knowles from Lancaster CID says that enquiries remain ongoing, and it’s hoped that some elements of the investigations will be concluded in the near future.
Det Sgt Knowles told Beyond Radio: ‘’There were numerous incidents surrounding the match, including pitch encroachment inside the stadium, reports of an assault outside the ground and a gentleman in a mobility scooter assaulted a bit further down the road. Then there’s the racist abuse allegation that my team have been investigating.
‘’The pitch encroachment issues have been left with Greater Manchester Police to liaise with Bolton and deal with as they see fit.
‘’As for the two assaults, with the gentleman in the mobility scooter, we’ve made all reasonable lines of enquiry, but unfortunately those responsible haven’t been identified.
‘’With the incident of the male assaulted near the stadium, we sent various CCTV images back to Greater Manchester Police to try and identify who they were, as we suspect they were involved. As of yet, they haven’t provided any positive identification.
‘’The racist abuse investigation is still ongoing. I am conscious that it has been going on for quite a long time, and we’ve been hampered to an extent with the availability of getting key statements. We do have body warn footage and CCTV, and it won’t be long before we’ll be drawing that investigation to a close and giving people an update on the outcome.
‘’It’s an enquiry that we can’t bring to a conclusion until we’re happy that we’ve done everything that’s reasonable. I’d have liked it to have been done a little quicker, but some of it has been out of our control. We’ll update again in a couple of weeks.’’
