A new Aldi store in Lancaster could get the go-ahead after council officers recommended that planning permission be granted.
The new supermarket could be built in fields at Lawsons Bridge, Scotforth Road.
Lancaster City Council officers said: "The development of the site to provide a food store will bring social, economic and environmental benefits to the area."
Councillors on the council's planning regulatory commitee will have the final say, and will meet to discuss the application on Monday.
The application by Aldi Stores Ltd is for "erection of a food store (Class E) with land regrading, access, cycle route, landscaping and swales and the provision of associated infrastructure, including car and cycle parking facilities, vehicle charging spaces, pedestrian access routes and servicing".
The site is owned by Aldi who have other stores in Lancaster, Morecambe and Carnforth.
Planning permission was previously given for a Booths food store on the land.
A report published ahead of the meeting said the new Aldi would create "additional jobs both during construction and once operational".
"Regard must also be given to the fact that there is an extant planning permission on this site for similar development, albeit of a larger scale, which represents a potential fall-back opportunity," says the council report.
"There have been lengthy negotiations during the consideration of this application to ensure the development is capable of being implemented without significant adverse impacts on the local environment and the community surrounding it. Overall, it is considered that the proposed development, with mitigation, accords with the Development Plan."
The council has received 18 objections to the development from the public, on grounds including that there is a Booths store and another Aldi store just over one mile from the site, loss of field that supports wildlife and area for pets to roam, and increase in traffic on an already congested A6.
The council has received one letter of support and four comments neither objecting nor supporting.
The meeting will be held at Morecambe Town Hall, is open to the public and starts at 10.30am.
