Council issues warning after fake QR codes found on carpark pay machines

Drivers in the Lancaster district are being warned after fake QR codes were found on pay and display machines in the city.

The discovery was made over the weekend, and following reports, council staff checked all carparks they operate and removed the codes from where they were found.

Motorists are being advised to always pay via the official Ringo App.

A spokesperson for Lancaster City Council said: ‘’We don't use QR codes for payment on machines, but scammers have been sticking them on to try to steal people's personal information.

‘’The QR code takes you to a fake Ringo website designed to look like the genuine parking website where you'll be asked to enter your payment details.

‘’The reason we don't use QR codes for payment is because they're vulnerable to scammers.

‘’Following reports of QR codes appearing at payment machines, our parking staff checked all machines for fake codes and removed them.

‘’Our parking staff will continue to check information boards for fake QR codes but if you do spot one, please email parking@lancaster.gov.uk.’’
