A hot-spot for anti-social behaviour in Lancaster is having a makeover.
Work is being carried out this week to improve the look of Aalborg Square, outside Lancaster Magistrates Court.
A Lancaster City Council spokesperson said the work was to make the square "a more open, attractive and safer place to be for businesses, pedestrians and other users".
"(Work) will begin this week with the removal of four of the whitebeam and lime trees," said the spokesperson.
"This follows crown raising works completed in November last year when lower branches were removed to raise the height of their canopies.
"By opening up the square it is hoped that the area will be less prone to anti-social behaviour.
"The lawned areas in the square are also expected to improve.
"The trees removed will be replaced by the planting of 12 trees at another public site.
"The works are expected to take two days to complete. We apologise for any inconvenience the works may cause."
There was a mixed reaction after Lancaster City Council posted about the work on their Facebook page.
County Councillor Charlie Edwards said: "It would make a great little market square, extend the town centre and breathe new life into this square!"
Garry said: "Great idea! Far too crowded with all those trees."
Tom said: "Antisocial behaviour directly opposite the police station and outside the courts. What a time to be alive eh?"
And Jenny said: "Just another excuse to cut down more trees, the council seem to dislike trees, forever cutting them down. We want greenery not concrete."
