Up to 100 artists and performers to receive cash pay-out at unique 'Morecambe People's Biennial'

One hundred creative people will get a pay-out and a chance to show off their work or perform at a unique event for Morecambe.

The Morecambe People's Biennial will be held this Saturday, July 6 at the Kings Arms pub in the town.

Artist and organiser Anthony Padgett has received funding to give directly to local creative people: whether artists, writers, singers, dancers, film makers or musicians.

Mr Padgett said the idea is to "help local creative people - involving different groups, making a ground up arts initiative that provides a model for activity in a post-work society".

Cash payments of £40 will be made to up to 100 artists or creatives who come along to the Marine Road Central venue to register from 6pm on Saturday night.

They will need to be 18+ and show proof of ID and current residency in the area (north of the Lune, West of the A6, South of the Bay and East of the Irish Sea).

People who register will have the chance to show off their work, or perform something.

The first 20 to arrive in the categories of visual artist, dancer, musician, writer and film-maker/performer, will be given a voucher. Money will be given to those with a voucher, and will require the signing of a receipt.

The People's Biennial is part of Morecambe Arts Weekend, which includes the fourth Morecambe Bay Art Fair to be held in the Winter Gardens on Saturday and Sunday.

Other locations for exhibitions or performances include Morecambe Library, the Midland Hotel and the West End Playhouse on Yorkshire Street.

The funding to Morecambe Artists’ Colony has come from Morecambe Town Council and the Lancashire Culture and Sport Fund, and donations.

The event has been supported by Morecambe Town Council, Lancashire County Council, Morecambe Artists’ Colony, the Salon Morecambe and the West End Playhouse.
