Morecambe Football Club has confirmed the signing of midfielder Jensen Weir on a season-long loan from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.
Born in Warrington, Weir began his career in the youth setup at Wigan Athletic before signing a professional deal with the Latics in 2019, with a move to Albion coming a year later.
The 20-year-old spent the duration of the 2021/22 campaign on-loan at fellow Sky Bet League One side Cambridge United, making 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing one assist which came in United’s 2-0 win over Morecambe at the Mazuma Stadium in November.
The youngster, who is able to play across a variety of positions and has experience at right-midfield, central midfield, defensive midfield and centre-back, says he can’t wait to get started with the Shrimps.
“It’s really good to be here,” he said.
“I’m buzzing to get it done and I’m looking forward to the start of the season now
“It’s something I’m looking forward to, just trying to get into the team, get as many games as I can and do as well as I can.
“I’ve played here [the Mazuma Stadium] a few times, even when I was at Wigan in the U18s/U23s, we played here a few times and at some of the various training grounds around here, so I’m not unfamiliar with the stadium.
Weir took part in his first training session with the squad on Monday morning, and he says he is impressed with the standard on display.
He added: “It was nice to be back playing and training, I’m enjoying it, the session was good, it was a really good standard and I’m looking forward to more.
“I can do a bit of everything, I can do that deeper role, I’m a midfielder so I can do the four, eight, those kind of roles and come deeper.
“I can pass it, get up to the box, get shots off in and around the box, looking to add goals, and I can do that nasty side of the game, headers and stuff like that, I’m pretty all rounded.”
