Lancaster Castle’s Police Museum is a great family trip out, writes ROSS CHAPMAN.
This year, one of Lancaster’s most well-known tourist spots opened up a museum within its grounds showcasing the history of our county’s police force.
Lancaster Castle’s Lancashire Police Museum has only been open to the public since June 9 but has an incredibly impressive display of information and exhibits.
The museum is located next to the Lancaster Castle keep and has two floors and sixteen cells showcasing the history of Lancashire Police and how it has evolved to become what it is today.
Considering the short space of time it’s been open, Lancashire Police Museum have a very thorough range of information about the constabulary, past and present, on a number of topics such as the increased role of women within the police, uniform, infamous local crimes, policing during the war and technological advances in the force overtime.
The ground floor focuses more on prison life, whereas the top floor is centred around the history of the police.
Once leaving the museum, you’ll be much more well-informed on the history of the police in general, not just in Lancashire – I know I certainly was!
Alongside the exhibition, there is also information on current roles within the constabulary and how to join the police in those positions.

It is only currently open on Thursdays and Fridays. Admission is free for all ages and 30-minute, free guided tours are available throughout the day.
They’ve previously welcomed current officer Janet Radcliffe on more than one occasion to discuss many elements of policing, and will be hosting another session with her on Thursday September 22.
The museum will be open for an extra day on Saturday September 10 as part of Heritage Open Day. As well as this, a free one-hour guided tour of the castle site is also available on the day.
If you’re struggling for something to do in the final couple of weeks of the summer holidays, then look no further than Lancashire Police Museum! More information here.
