Popular Morecambe hospital cafe is saved and will reopen

A hospital cafe in Morecambe which was due to permanently close has been given a reprieve and will now be reopening.

The Queen Victoria Hospital cafe shut in February but will now open again on March 20 following a campaign and online petition by volunteers.

A volunteer posted on Facebook on Thursday: "Just an update for all you lovely people who signed our petition. We have now managed to negotiate with the NHS to keep it open and run it ourselves as NHS volunteers. Power to the people. Thank you everyone."

There was an outcry in January after it was announced that the Royal Voluntary Service cafe would be closing.

Supporters said there would be nowhere for patients and staff including ambulance drivers to get a hot drink or snack if the cafe closed down.

The online petition to keep it open was signed by almost 500 people.

Bridget Lees, Executive Chief Nurse, Director of Volunteering, University Hospitals Morecambe Bay NHS Trust, said: "It's wonderful news that our cafes at Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe and Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal are both re-opening with our Morecambe Bay Trust volunteers and that patients, visitors and staff will be able to enjoy a hot drink and snack while they are using or working within our services.

"Our heartfelt thanks go to both teams for keeping the service going."
