Planned M6 motorway closure near Lancaster scrapped due to Queen's funeral

Traffic congestion on the M6 near Junction 34 on Sunday

A planned M6 motorway closure for this coming weekend has been scrapped ahead of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

National Highways announced that the scheduled closure between Junction 32 and Junction 33 for essential maintenance - scheduled for the weekend of Friday September 16 to Monday September 19 - will now not take place.

Alan Shepherd, National Highways Divisional Director, also said planned future weekend closures of the M6 section are being reviewed after the travel chaos of this past weekend.

Motorists reported being stuck in gridlock on the M6 and A6 for hours after a section of road between Lancaster and Preston was shut for bridge repairs.

Further closures were scheduled for the next three weekends.

Mr Shepherd apologised to motorists for the delays and said National Highways would be looking at traffic management, signage and communications ahead of future weekend closures to "minimise disruption".

The Queen's funeral will take place in London on Monday September 19, which has been declared a bank holiday in the UK.
