Payphone on Lancaster street stages photo exhibition as its last hurrah

The phone box outside Marks and Spencer in Lancaster

A photographer's exhibition of life on a Lancaster shopping street has gone on display inside a public phone box before it is removed for good.

Street photographer Chris Bennett's 'Project X-100' can be seen inside the phone kiosk outside Marks & Spencer on Penny Street in the city centre.

The images are part of a five-year project documenting life in Lancaster, with photos taken from inside the phone box itself.

The KX-100 phone kiosk has been taken out of service and is due to be removed.

Before this, BT have given permission for the exhibition to be staged.

"Near the end of the era of the British public telephone box, the candid portraits here encompass all of life, including the beautiful, the scary, sad, hard working, musical, joyful, protesting and even prehistoric!" says a sign inside the phone box.

"Images are all filtered through an ever evolving patina of stickers, residue from torn off posters, scratches and spills making a captivating view of the people who visit, live and work in the city."

People who see a photo of themselves inside the phone box, are welcome to take it.

There is also a QR code for people to scan and leave comments on Instagram at @chrisbennettstreet

BT said the payphone has been taken out of commission because "not enough people use it to justify keeping it".
