A moving Remembrance-themed display has been revealed outside Morecambe Railway Station.
The display has transformed the flowerbeds into a heartfelt tribute ahead of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
Visitors stepping out of Morecambe Station are greeted by two striking, willow-woven Spitfires – sculpted by north-west-based artist Sarah Gallagher-Hayes – soaring above a field of 500 metal poppies.
Each one has been hand-painted by local people and the Morecambe Town Council Town Rangers.
The MP, town, city and county councillors, and representatives from veterans’ organisations – including Healthier Heroes, Bay Veteran’s Association, and the Morecambe and Heysham branch of the Royal British Legion – are all lending their support to the project by planting poppies and paying their respects.
Members of the public are now invited to pick a poppy to take home for a suggested donation of £2 each. All proceeds will go directly towards supporting Morecambe’s Armed Forces community.
Councillor Roger Dennison, Morecambe Town Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said, ‘It has been truly heartening to see the community come together on this project – from painting to planting. It would be a wonderful conclusion to see all 500 poppies find homes in our community, raising funds to support our local veterans, serving personnel, and their families in the process.’

Morecambe Town Council has also facilitated a display of crocheted poppies, lovingly hand-made by local resident Diane Rainford. These will go on display in the Memorial Garden on Princes Crescent, Bare, complementing the displays organised there by Bare Community Association.
The funds raised from donations will be administered by Morecambe Town Council in coordination with the Morecambe and Heysham branch of the Royal British Legion, ensuring their use is endorsed by the local Armed Forces community.
This project is part of Morecambe Town Council’s expanding Bloom Together initiative; a mission to brighten up the town one flowerbed at a time.
