The new group on Morecambe Town Council say they want to make a difference for the whole district with their work.
Recently, four councillors formed the Bay Independent Group. Cary Matthews of Heysham Central ward, Vicky Boyd-Power of Heysham North ward, Paul Anderton of Torrisholme ward and Jake Goodwin of Westgate ward were all formerly members of the Morecambe Bay Independents.
Cary Matthews says: “We have parted ways with the MBI’s as we have different aspirations and hopes for representing both Morecambe and Heysham on the City Council.
‘’We look forward to working together as a small and effective group to promote the interests of our residents and local communities.
Cllr Matthews, who will be the leader of the new group is also the current Chair of Morecambe Town Council.
Cllr Paul Anderton added: “We are all excited about being part of the Bay Independent Group and are looking forward to working constructively and collaboratively for the good of our district.”
BIG says it is a group of like-minded people who firmly believe that local politics can best serve the community by working together; listening to and respecting the constructive views and opinions of others to find solutions to shared issues.
In a statement, the group said: ‘’BIG believes that the choices we make effect the whole of the district not just one area. Working together at a local government level brings positive change, brings growth and prosperity to us all. We believe the better future for our area lies in recognising that we are all part of something bigger. We believe that Morecambe and Heysham are a valuable part of the wider area. We believe that our community consists of a multitude of backgrounds, experiences and preferences. We want to take everyone with us on a journey to rebuild a thriving District that lives, works and plays together.
‘’BIG believes that local politics is about serving the local community - that means protecting our environment, using our resources wisely to deliver the best possible outcomes, providing safe communities and homes, working to create the right environment for businesses to prosper, to support the next generation of local entrepreneurs and to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to contribute and be involved. Listening and considering other people’s desires, views, experiences, advice helps us to build a better and brighter future for us all.
The opportunities for our local area are strong as we recover from Covid. We are excited about Eden and all that will bring, but strongly believe that its success will not just be numbers through the doors of a great visitor attraction. It will be the new local businesses and jobs that are created around it, the opportunities for investment into the infrastructure of our rail and transport systems and economic growth it will bring will have a positive impact on the whole District.’’
