Morecambe lifeboat crew avert ‘potential tragedy’

Morecambe’s lifeboat crew averted a ‘potential tragedy’ after a group of youths found themselves cut off by the tide.

On Saturday evening Morecambe RNLI’s were called to service by His Majesty’s Coastguard to respond to a report of youths being trapped off the Battery car park holding onto a channel marker.

A spokesperson for the crew said: ''Morecambe’s Deputy Launch Authority Martyn Browitt instructed crew helmed by James Donnell to immediately launch the inshore lifeboat, as the tide was flooding and swift decisive action was needed to avoid a potential tragedy.

''Upon arrival of crew to the location the youths were seen wading through the high water back towards the shoreline. The crew of immediately assisted the youths back to shore.

''One of the youths had swallowed a large amount amount of water. He was offered first aid but this was declined by the youth who was making a good recovery.

''Once all youths were safely back to shore the crew returned to station ready to prepare the lifeboat for the next shout.''

The team are now reminding people to be aware of the dangers of being cut off by the tide in Morecambe Bay.
