Man seriously assaulted in Lancaster city centre as families looked on

A court has heard how a man was repeatedly kicked in the head in front of horrified families in Lancaster city centre.

Adam Barnes has been jailed after being found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and causing damage to a police vehicle.

It follows an incident on July 20, when Barnes was sat on Horse Shoe Corner within the city centre, drinking with a number of associates.

Lancaster Magistrates Court heard he then began attacking a male associate, pushing him off a bench and kicking him to the head numerous times, in front of families who witnessed the incident.

The man received injuries to his body and head.

The court further heard than after being arrested by local police, Barnes decided to urinate and smear his blood within a police vehicle, causing the vehicle to be temporarily unavailable to respond to emergencies.

The 47-year-old, of no fixed address, was sent to prison for five months and one day.
