A train has derailed on the West Coast Main Line this morning.
Emergency services are currently at the scene after the derailment earlier this morning of an Avanti West Coast Service, on the line between Penrith and Oxenholme.
There are no reports of any injuries after the incident at around 6:30am on Monday morning.
All lines are blocked north of Preston as a result of the derailment and the advice for passengers from rail operator Avanti West Coast is to avoid attempts to travel north of Preston.
An Avanti West Coast spokesperson said on Monday morning: "All lines are blocked north of Preston due to a derailed train between Penrith North Lakes and Oxenholme Lake District.
"Please do not attempt to travel north of Preston today.
"Customers with tickets for journeys north of Preston dated 3 November will be able to use their tickets tomorrow (4 November) on any Avanti West Coast service via the same route.
"If you abandoned your journey as a result of the disruption, then you can claim a fee free refund from where you bought your ticket. If you continued with your journey but were delayed by 15 minutes or more, you can claim Delay Repay compensation from the train company you travelled with."
The North West Ambulance Service said: “Following reports of a train derailment near Shap, the trust has dispatched resources to the scene.
“We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services.
“Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible.”
Trains running between Carlisle and Preston may be delayed by up to 120 minutes or cancelled, with major disruption until the end of the day.
Avanti West Coast:
Tickets will be accepted on the following routes, at no extra cost:
- CrossCountry between Edinburgh and Birmingham New Street
- LNER between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross
- ScotRail between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central
If your train is cancelled, your ticket is valid on one of the two Avanti West Coast services immediately before your booked train, or one of the two immediately after.
Tickets for today on this route will be valid on Tuesday 4 November without alteration required.
TransPennine Express:
Trains that normally run between Glasgow Central and Liverpool Lime Street will run between Glasgow Central and Carlisle, and between Preston and Liverpool Lime Street.
Trains that normally run between Edinburgh / Glasgow Central and Manchester Airport will run between Edinburgh / Glasgow Central and Carlisle, and between Preston and Manchester Airport.
To help you complete your journey rail replacement transport has been requested as follows:
- Preston to Carlisle, calling at Lancaster, Oxenholme Lake District, Penrith North Lakes
- Carlisle to Preston, calling at Penrith North Lakes, Oxenholme Lake District and Lancaster
These services will be every hour, on the hour in both directions.
Southbound
If you are travelling from Glasgow Central and Edinburgh towards Manchester and Liverpool Lime Street, you can travel via the East Coast Mainline. Tickets have been arranged, at no extra cost on the following routes:
- CrossCountry and LNER between Edinburgh and York
- Northern between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport
- TransPennine Express between Edinburgh and Newcastle
- TransPennine Express between York, Manchester Stations and Liverpool Lime Street
- ScotRail between Glasgow Central and Edinburgh
If you are travelling from Preston towards Manchester, you can use your ticket at no extra cost on the following routes:
- Any TransPennine Express between Preston and Manchester
- Northern between Preston and Manchester Airport calling at Bolton, Manchester Oxford Road, Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport
If you are travelling from Preston towards Liverpool Lime Street, you can use your ticket at no extra cost on the following routes:
- Avanti West Coast between Preston and Wigan North Western
- Northern between Wigan North Western and Liverpool Lime Street calling at St Helens Central
- TransPennine Express between Wigan North Western and Liverpool Lime Street calling at St Helens Central
Northbound
If you are travelling from Manchester, Bolton or Liverpool Lime Street towards Edinburgh and Glasgow Central, you can travel via the East Coast Mainline. Tickets have been arranged, at no extra cost on the following routes:
- CrossCountry and LNER between York and Edinburgh
- Northern between Manchester Airport and Manchester Piccadilly. If you are travelling from Bolton, please board Northern services between Bolton and Manchester Piccadilly
- TransPennine Express between Liverpool Lime Street / Manchester Piccadilly and York
- ScotRail between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central
If you are travelling from Manchester or Liverpool Lime Street towards Preston, you can use your ticket at no extra cost on the following routes:
- Any TransPennine Express between Manchester / Liverpool Lime Street and Preston
- Avanti West Coast between Wigan North Western and Preston
- Northern between Manchester Airport and Preston calling at Bolton and Preston
- Northern between Liverpool Lime Street and Wigan North Western calling at St Helens Central
If the train you have a ticket for is cancelled, you can travel on any TransPennine Express, Northern, or LNER service within the two hours before or after your cancelled service.
