Lancaster Crown Court, which hasn’t been used since 2019, is set to close permanently, under government plans.
The court, based at Lancaster Castle, last heard cases six years ago, with all cases dealt with at Preston Crown Court instead.
The HM Courts and Tribunal Service (HMCTS) said the historical court "does not offer modern and flexible accommodation and has significant issues with security and accessibility", and prior to 2019 the court had a very low level of utilisation in both criminal and civil cases.
They added that the court cannot be modernised to the required standard due to the listed status of the castle building and because site operates as a tourist attraction.
Jane Wignall, Delivery Director from HMCTS North West said Preston Crown Court was a modern and accessible building with the capacity to accommodate any cases that would have been heard in Lancaster.
She said: ‘’ The journey times to Preston have been carefully considered, along with the overall impact on court users, judiciary, and staff.
‘’We are seeking the views of local users, judiciary, staff, justice practitioners and elected representatives to better understand the impact that this proposal may have within Lancashire, and we welcome views on any other options you think we should consider.
‘’I would urge all local court users and stakeholders to consider this proposal and respond to the consultation so that we can consider your views before making a final decision on the future of the court.’’
Nearby Lancaster Courthouse is to remain in use for civil hearings and for cases dealt with at magistrates level.
There is a consultation on the closure proposal under way, with a deadline of July 2 for anyone wishing to respond.
Lancaster Crown Court is one of four crown courts in Lancashire, with the others being in Burnley, Preston Combined Court and Preston Sessions House.
