The Lancaster MP has presented a petition in the House of Commons opposing controversial plans to build a quarry near Preesall village.
The plans for land off Bourbles Lane would see the removal of hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sand and gravel and to insert 300,000 tonnes of tested soil, clay and hardcore.
If ultimately approved, the extracted materials would be used within the construction industry.
An application has been submitted by Baxter Construction to Lancashire Council for approval for a scoping document which would enable initial work to be undertaken on the site, prior to any full planning application.
Cat Smith has now presented a petition in parliament signed by dozens of campaigners.
Speaking in the Commons, she said: ‘’I present this petition which has been signed by 45 of my constituents who live in and around the beautiful village of Preesall.
‘’Residents are concerned about the proposal to build a new quarry, due to concerns about the roads, the environmental impact, as well as noise, dust, pollution and contaminated water.
‘’Quarries disrupt the water table, which is a worry in a village which suffers from localised flooding.
‘’The petition asks the House of Commons to urge the government to ask Lancashire County Council to engage with local residents and ultimately reject the plans.’’
