A Lancaster businesswoman has returned home after walking more than 2,500 miles over the past six months to raise funds for aid in the Middle East.
Ruth Herbert's 'Big Trek for Palestine' took her from Arnside to Istanbul to raise funds for the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians.
Ruth, who runs a tattoo artist shop in Lancaster, walked into Istanbul to finish the trek on November 15.
She said that Istanbul welcomed her with warmth and open arms; with new friends and many enthusiastic supporters treating her to the best of Turkish hospitality, and her adventure received extensive press and TV coverage.
Ruth’s extraordinary solo journey began in May.
She walked, carrying her belongings on her back, to the south coast and on through Europe, meeting and overcoming multiple hazards and difficulties including crossing fields of unexploded mines, a dangerous proximity to wild dogs and close encounters with hungry bears looking for food, pre hibernation.
Ruth wore through three pairs of boots and struggled to find food suitable for her vegan diet.
She also raised £60,000 (including gift aid) for the charity - a British organisation providing vital medical care and humanitarian assistance to Palestinians affected by ongoing violence and displacement.
After spending the weekend with her family on the south coast, she will make her way via London, Milton Keynes, Manchester and Blackburn back to Lancaster on Friday. H
