Kites fly high over Morecambe as festival-goers brave the rain

Morecambe Kite Festival was held on Sunday

Colourful kites of all shapes and sizes flew high over Morecambe Bay at a rain-hit festival on the Promenade.

Wet weather did not deter kite flyers from taking part in Morecambe Kite Festival on Sunday.

Professional kite displays flew over the South Beach, between the Midland hotel and the West End, and members of the public also got involved by flying their own kites when the weather allowed.

There was also music from the Illuminations Community Choir, guide dog demonstrations, stalls, workshops and more.

The free festival was organised by Morecambe Town Council.

"A shame about the weather today, but we hope everyone who made it out had a good time!" said a post from Morecambe Town Council on their Facebook page following the event.

"Morecambe Kite Festival wouldn’t have gone ahead without the following key sponsors and delivery partners – a big thanks to all of them, and all of you who donated to our crowdfunder."

The town council thanked Lancashire County Council, Lancaster City Council, PlaceFirst, Morecambe BID, The Northern Kite Group, Guide Dogs, Galloways, Sand in your Eye, Stanleys Community Centre and Beyond Radio - represented on the day by Phill Hayward and Phil McGrath.

Festival-goers also posted comments on the town council page after the festival.

Sandy said: "Was a great display, thank you for organising a great event."

Jeanette said: "Typical weather comes to spoil it after all the work that would have been put into organising it."

And Linda said: "Lots of kites there, we flew two, had half a hour good fun, before the rain started."

Morecambe's kite festival was previously run by More Music for 23 years, under the name 'Catch the Wind', but they announced in 2024 that due to the "arts funding climate" it could no longer go ahead.

Earlier this year, the town council announced plans to run their own kite festival in Morecambe.
