You could play a part in bringing new arts and cultural events to Lancaster and help reinvigorate part of the historic city centre.
Lancaster Arts and Lancaster City Council are working in partnership to deliver a cultural programme of events called Mill Race: Flow of Change.
The cultural programme, funded by Historic England and launched in autumn 2021 has brought exciting arts and culture to the Mill Race area of Lancaster, so-called due to the historic watercourse running beneath the streets that was used to power the town’s early industries.
Mill Race: Flow of Change complements the High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) programme of investment in buildings and spaces, which is also focused on the Mill Race area, located to the north east of the city centre around North Road, Lower Church Street and St Leonardgate.
The time has come for Lancaster’s local communities to play a part in deciding what to do next with the cultural programme. Members of the public are being encouraged to join a cultural consortium, a group of individuals responsible for deciding which artistic and cultural events should take place over the next 12 months.
Applications are now open to anyone over the age of 18, and represent a diverse mix of locally based artists, arts and heritage organisations, local volunteers, residents, as well as businesses and services in the area. The cultural consortium particularly welcomes applications from people who have disabilities, those who identify as part of the Global Majority and those who are new to the Lancaster district, as well as those who have lived here all their lives. The deadline for applications is Sunday 9 April.
Jocelyn Cunningham, Director of Lancaster Arts, said: ‘‘This is a very special opportunity to get involved in shaping the cultural future of this part of Lancaster, which has such a rich history, and a chance to not only celebrate the Mill Race as a core part of the city, but also help inform its future.
‘’We are excited to hear from anyone passionate about how arts and culture help a city evolve, about how history influences our future and welcome those with knowledge and expertise in the Mill Race area or with experience in cultural programmes.’’
