Diggers have moved in to work on the Frontierland site in Morecambe as local people speculated on the reason.
Social media was awash with speculation after work vehicles were seen clearing part of the wasteland at the former fairground on Marine Road on Friday.
Some wondered if the site was being cleared and levelled ahead of possible development.
But Lancaster City Council confirmed that the work was to prepare the site for filming an episode of The Bay television programme.
The Bay TV cameras will be in town this week and next to shoot scenes for the fourth series of the hit ITV crime drama.
Lancaster City Council owns the Frontierland site, which has remained derelict since the theme park closed in 2000.
The Promenade site is one of the town's biggest eyesores and local people have been hoping to see it developed for many years.
In that time, two planned retail-led developments of the site have fallen through.
Potential developers have been showing an interest in the site this year, and it was revealed in June that a number of hotels had come forward.
But as yet, no decisions have been announced on how the former Wild West theme park might be used in future.
A spokesperson for Lancaster City Council said there was no update on the future of the site at present.
