Crews abandon training exercise to tackle Lancaster derelict building fire

Six fire engines attended the scene of a blaze at a derelict building in Lancaster yesterday evening.

The alarm was raised just after 6pm (Monday June 19), with appliances from Morecambe, Hornby, Carnforth, Bolton-le-Sands, Fulwood and Blackburn called to the blaze on Quernmore Road.

Crews were already in the vicinity of the fire, as they were taking part in a multi-agency high rise exercise at the William Thompson Building at the University of Cumbria in Lancaster.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used two hose reels, thermal imaging camera and a ventilation unit to bring the fire under control.

The drone team were also in attendance.

By 10:30pm, the incident had been reduced to two fire engines, with crews remaining in attendance damping down and monitoring and extinguishing any remaining hot spots.
